Our spring hydrant flushing program has begun and is currently underway. We’re starting at the Northeast side of town and making our way West and South as we go. In the event youa rehaving temporarily low or fluctuating water pressure or discolored water, the flushing is most likely the cause.

Flushing is primarily performed in the spring and fall, you will see Public Works personnel flushing water from hydrants. The goal of the program is to make sure the hydrants operate properly in the event of a fire and to remove sediment from the pipes in order to maintain water quality.

Hydrants are flushed between 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Signs are placed in neighborhoods to remind residents that the program is underway in their area.

As described, fire hydrants are periodically opened to flush water mains in the system. Additionally, the Fire and Public Works departments routinely use hydrants to make assessments as to whether adequate pressure and flow are available to satisfy normal system demands as well as the increased demand required in the event of a fire. These actions, as well as some construction activities, may result in brief periods during which you may observe moderate discoloration in your tap water. Customers are encouraged to contact the Water Department if rusty water occurs.

Is rusty water safe for consumption?
Yes. Occasionally water becomes discolored after hydrant flushing. If this happens, residents are encouraged to let their faucets run for a few minutes if they notice any discoloration. If it does not clear the first time, wait a few minutes and run the water again. You should avoid washing clothes until the water is clear.
